Description

The Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) works at the forefront of photonics research to bring laser based sensing systems to the market. With expertise in remote wind measurement, cable monitoring and underwater photonics for communications and imaging, we have much to offer technology developers for subsea instrumentation. Working under Fraunhofer UK Ltd. and as part of the wider Fraunhofer network, the centre is the first of its kind in the UK and has a remit to work with UK industry to ensure that key enabling photonics technology is getting to the markets that need it.


Capability Statement

Fraunhofer CAP has expertise across a wide range of photonics and is equally happy to develop bespoke laser systems as they are to develop laser enabled instrumentation. With in-house prototyping capabilities, our mechanical, optical and electronic design experience enable us to take designs from the laboratory to the field.


Development Activities

Fraunhofer CAP has had a number of recent development projects on offshore renewable energy. We are actively seeking end users of break through technologies in the following areas:

1. WInd LIDAR - remote sensing of wind for marine operations - weather windows can be widened with more accurate and responsive detection of gusts and wind mapping. We are developing compact wind LIDAR for use in this application.

2. Power cable monitoring - we have recently demonstrated multi-functional power cable monitoring, exploiting the standard optical communications fibre found in modern marine power cables. This can be used to log cable trauma, accurately locate cable faults or warn of impending cable infrastructure issues.

3. Underwater photonics - with access to test tanks, we have developed line of sight optical communications and demonstrated in both test tank and real world environments. With big improvements over acoustic transceivers, visible light communications underwater is an emmerging area that will bring big changes to subsea instrumentation.
