Several test and demonstration facilities including shallow water testing facilities with artificial seabed, offshore anemometry platform and a 7MW offshore wind demonstration turbine, the world’s most advanced open access offshore wind turbine dedicated to research and product validation.


ORE Catapult is a technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy. We deliver prioritised research underpinned by world-class test and demonstration facilities, collaborating with industry, academia and Government to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy and create UK economic benefit.

Capability Statement

ORE Catatpult is an independent partner with expertise and experience in reducing cost and risk associated with offshore renewable energy technology development and operations by improving reliability of new technology through representative testing. We help to reduce the cost of offshore renewable energy, transforming the industry and delivering UK economic benefit.

We do this by:

  • Being an independent and trusted partner;
  • Working with industry and academia to develop and introduce new technologies and ways of working to reduce risk and cost and deliver business growth;
  • Having world-leading test and demonstration facilities and an engineering and research team with deep knowledge and expertise;
  • Improving technology reliability by developing tests which are more representative of real-life conditions.

Development Activities

ORE Catapult have identified a number of specific technology innovation challenges within the offshore renewable energy industry, the resolution of which will help drive down the cost of offshore renewable energy, and have a positive impact on the UK economy.

We are looking for industry, large and small, to help us address these challenges, and work collaboratively with our team of technical experts and test and demonstration assets to develop ideas into market-ready technology.

The current innovation challenges for offshore wind are:

  • Preventing the development of free spanning cables
  • Cost effective subsea survey of offshore wind farms – cables and foundations
  • Improving the transmission of low bandwidth CMS data
  • Cost effective offshore foundation cleaning technology solutions
  • Automation of wind farm servicing tasks
  • Deterring marine mammals from the site of piling operations
  • Corrosion protection on foundations in the inter-tidal zone
  • Keeping tabs on the extent of scour around the base of foundations
  • Prevention and repair of scour
