Astrimar is an independent consultancy providing technical risk, reliability engineering and integrity management services in the oil and gas and wider energy industry. We are able to provide reliability and technical risk analysis and engineering, reliability assurance, verification and training in reliability based approaches.

Through development of bespoke, reliability based solutions, we are able to support companies in efficient, science-based, analysis of data to make best estimates of reliability and integrity and drive optimised use of resources through real risk based approaches to design, qualification and asset integrity management.

Through our strategic role in shaping the industry's approach to reliability, technology qualification and technical risk management, and through our experience in implementing best practices, we are able to support companies who wish to align their practices to ISO 20815, API RP 17N, API RP 17Q, DNV A203 and EI S813.

Astrimar's highly trained team are experts in the areas of technical risk, integrity management, reliability engineering and qualification assurance in the oil and gas, offshore and marine renewables, and the wider energy, utilities and water industries.

Our consultants have many years' experience supporting a variety of development projects and operating assets. Corporate support has also been provided to a number of companies developing and implementing reliability engineering and management practices.

Astrimar Services are applied to design and development projects, operating assets and companies across the energy and utilities industries: including onshore, topside and subsea oil & gas production systems, drilling systems, BOPs, subsea wellheads, pipelines (onshore and offshore), flowlines, risers, process and utilities plant, control systems, umbilicals, marine and offshore renewables, water and gas distribution and power transmission.

Development Activities

At this time, operators are focussing their attention onto maximising value from their existing assets. This means their equipment needs to operate efficiently and effectively. Production efficiency can be greatly enhanced by maximising operational availability through minimising unplanned failures and through optimised maintenance and intervention. Companies need help to make the best use of the information they have about the condition of their equipment to more effectively plan inspection and maintenance. By preventing failures, not only does the equipment work more efficiently for longer, but the hidden additional costs of sub-optimal emergency response and secondary damage from the failure are also avoided.

pRIOriti-AIM Risk Based Inspection Optimisation Software

This uses actual equipment condition data to efficiently calculate equipment risk and recommended inspection intervals, providing a rational and scientific basis for operators to extend inspection periods on lower risk equipment and focus precious resources on higher risk areas, where failure rates are increased due to observed degradation, or consequences of failure are more severe. The pRIOriti-AIM software, combined with the asset specific recognition of equipment condition and risk, provides operators with real savings in inspection costs, while providing improved understanding and confidence in the management of asset integrity risk.

Reliability – based valve testing frequency analysis

Astrimar’s valve testing frequency tool uses reliability based state-space models to determine risk-based valve testing frequency, to maximise confidence in valve integrity and minimise disruption to normal operations. The tool to analyses the data gathered from valve testing over time and perform statistical analysis to determine the probability of the valve being in each state (new, degraded, failed) and the associated state transition rates. Astrimar then make a comparison between the predicted probability of failure and the maximum allowable failure risk, in order to estimate the maximum time before the next test, or until an intervention may be required. The analysis can be applied to single valves, populations of valves and system configurations of valves, e.g in trees and manifolds.

Risk based spares optimisation and operational response preparedness

Astrimar’s radical approach to a more rational and transparent basis to sparing and preparedness decisions is based on understanding the fundamental factors that influence failures and their consequences with respect to system operability and availability. Our in-house tool to facilitates the collation of quantified inputs in such a way as to allow interrogation of results, sensitivity analysis, the best mitigation strategies and where to focus efforts on improving data collection. A risked cost benefit evaluation provides recommendations for investment in equipment, sparing and logistics to efficiently facilitate urgent repairs when required.

The tool also supports continuous improvement and ensure decisions that are consistent and improving over time. Our approach greatly reduces the uncertainties used as the basis of the assessment and has provided clear justification for re-focussing sparing requirements and optimising spares holdings for single assets as well as combined spares holding across multiple assets.

Support to Technology Developer's for Best Practice Technology Qualification

When introducing new technology, it is essential to understand when the technology is ready for deployment and the risk that deployment entails. For example, even existing, proven technology may be required to operate in more challenging environments, beyond existing industry experience. When this happens, additional technical risk and uncertain reliability performance is introduced.

Astrimar have gained significant experience in developing and implementing industry best practice in technology qualification. We are currently directly involved in the updates to industry best practices including API RP 17N and the new substanitally revised API 17Q (due to be released later this year).

We have track record in assisting technology developers and operators to manage risk through qualification testing and analysis. In particular, we have helped our clients to:

  • Understand the level of technical risk and uncertainty
  • Forecast expected reliability
  • Determine/review initial Technology Readiness Level (TRL)
  • Identify and plan qualification tests to raise the TRL to the required level of readiness
