TWI is an research and technology organisation, with expertise in materials joining and engineering processes as applied in industry. Our North East Technology Centre, TWI North, provides world class training in non-destructive testing (NDT), welding, welding inspection, plant inspection, welding processes and procedures and underwater diver training. Alongside these extensive training and examination services we provide advice, information and engineering services in joining technology, structural integrity and material properties to a broad client base.

Advanced Solutions for Industry’s needs:

We provide our industrial members and stakeholders with authoritative and impartial expert advice, knowhow and safety assurance through engineering, materials and joining technologies. We have developed many of today's tried and tested techniques for arc welding, adhesive and mechanical joining, cutting, and more recently novel advanced technologies such as friction stir welding, electron beam surface modification, automated laser cutting, cold spray deposition and sol-gel coatings. We have a wealth of experience in developing and implementing strategies to avoid the failure of advanced structures and reduce risk, e.g. in deep-water offshore oil and gas risers, nuclear reactors and aero-engines. We also offer world class technologies to develop and quantify understanding of weld microstructure-property relationships, material failure modes, and weldability without introducing flaws.

Case Studies

Optimising an aerospace component: replacing metal with composite

TWI has carried out a series of projects with Nabtesco Corporation in Japan on the design and optimisation of a composite part to replace one currently made of metal. The part, a reaction link, is a component in the flight control system of a commercial airplane and is used to adjust the flight attitude by moving the ailerons.

In-line service for internal inspection of unpiggable buried oil pipelines using long-range ultrasonic guided waves

TWI is part of a consortium of organisations behind an EU-funded project that has created a new inspection system for buried oil pipelines. The PIGWaves project has developed an inspection tool for in-service non-destructive testing (NDT) of unpiggable pipelines, which also provides an alternative to existing methods of inspection for piggable pipes. The new system delivers drastically reduced data storage time, greater (robot) inspection speed and far quicker availability of inspection results after robot recovery.
